Evaluating Pediatric Back Pain
Posted on: 3/4/08
Rheumatology News has posted an article regarding evaluating pediatric back pain. "Back pain in children and adolescents frequently has a recognizable origin, including developmental abnormalities, inflammatory or infectious diseases, mechanical problems and injuries, or, rarely, spinal tumors, according to Dr. Karen Onel," the article states.
The article mentions that causes of pediatric back pain when an injury is not present in a child or adolescent include: spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, Scheuermann's disease, vertebral osteomyelitis, diskitis, benign or malignant tumors, disk disease, spondyloarthropathies, hypermobility, and pain augmentation syndromes.
A thorough examination and full medical/family history are important in determining the actual cause of pain.
