Bio: My name is Sean Glaister, and I am excited to co-lead the Boston Spondyloarthritis Support Group alongside Nina.
I grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where I attended a local Spondyloarthritis Association of America support group and experienced firsthand the value of connecting with others living with spondyloarthritis. After nearly 10 years of chronic pain and symptoms, I was diagnosed with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) in 2024. I am currently a medical student at Tufts University School of Medicine and conduct axSpA research with Dr. Abhijeet Danve at Yale, focused on improving early detection and reducing diagnostic delays through tools such as A-Tool, a clinically validated self-screening tool available on SAA’s website and on backpain.today. Outside of medicine, I enjoy tennis, pickleball, volleyball, hiking, snowboarding, movies, music, fantasy sports, and exploring Boston’s food scene. I love meeting new people, hearing their stories, and helping create a supportive community where we can learn from and encourage one another.
Bio: My name is Nina Gulati, and I am so excited to be a co-leader alongside my classmate and friend, Sean Glaister.
I grew up in Fort Myers, Florida, and currently attend Tufts School of Medicine. I have long been interested in autoimmune diseases and am currently involved in rheumatology research at Tufts Medical Center. After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in rheumatology. Although I do not have spondyloarthritis, it was initially on my doctor’s differential when I sought care for chronic knee and hip pain. I was later diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This experience gave me an appreciation for the diagnostic journey that many patients face, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from group members about their lived experiences with spondylitis. In my free time, I enjoy going to the beach, working out, reading fiction, and making Indian food. I am excited to connect with group members and serve alongside Sean in this role!
At our meetings, we hope to offer members a place to meet others with spondylitis, learn about resources, treatments, and strategies for managing the condition, and receive support with their challenges. We also welcome family members, friends, and significant others of people with spondylitis, who would like to learn more about how to support their loved ones.
If this is your first time joining us, welcome! We are excited to have you. To make sure that all meetings are a supportive, safe space for all, we’ve put together some group guidelines. Check it out!
1. Confidentiality. What is said in the group stays in the group. You can share general information with others outside the group, but please don’t use names or identifying information of members.
2. Respect. Treat other group members with respect and understanding
3. Remember that everyone’s experience is different, and what worked for you might not work for someone else. As we say in social work, everyone is an expert on their own life!
4. Give everyone a chance to speak. Try not to monopolize the discussion!
5. Ask a doctor. Remember that most of us (group leaders included) are not doctors, so be careful about giving or taking medical advice.
